Discover Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake
Khao Sok is beautifully located between popular Southern Thailand destinations like Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, and Koh Samui. It’s a fantastic vacation spot where you can have close encounters with elephants, trek through the jungle, and enjoy canoeing for an unforgettable experience.
One of the highlights in Khao Sok National Park is the breathtaking Cheow Lan Lake, known for its floating raft houses and luxury tents – definitely a must-see! To help you make the most of your visit, we’ve gathered some recommended tours that will take you to various locations in Khao Sok.
What to Expect at Cheow Lan Lake
The main attraction in Khao Sok National Park is Cheow Lan Lake (also known as Khao Sok Lake). To visit, you need to book a tour, with popular options being either a day tour or an overnight package. I highly recommend the overnight tour, as the lake is vast, and one day doesn’t feel long enough. Staying overnight in a floating raft house is an experience you won’t want to miss!
The floating bungalows on the emerald-green lake offer stunning views of rocky limestone cliffs covered in forest.
Here’s what to expect on a 2-day, 1-night overnight package at Cheow Lan Lake:
Day 1:
In the morning, we were picked up from our accommodation and driven about an hour to the lake pier. From there, we boarded a longtail boat to reach our raft house for check-in. The boat ride across the expansive lake was beautiful!
The raft houses are basic, usually with shared bathrooms and just a bed with a fan. Electricity is available only from 6 PM to 8 AM, and there’s no Wi-Fi. After checking in and having lunch, we had some free time to swim or go kayaking.
In the afternoon, we took another longtail boat to enjoy a short jungle trek. This trek led us to a smaller lake where we boarded a bamboo raft to explore a small cave. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate about the park’s wildlife. On our way back, we were lucky to spot a wild elephant grazing by the lake — an unforgettable sight! After a group dinner, we headed to bed early.
Day 2:
Getting up early for sunrise at the lake is highly recommended; it’s breathtaking! After sunrise, we enjoyed a morning boat safari around the calm waters, surrounded by stunning limestone formations. From the boat, we spotted gibbons and beautiful hornbill birds. We had some more free time to swim, kayak, or relax with coffee before it was time to leave.
