10 days: the essentials

Colombo, the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa), Kandy and the hill country around Ella, ending with a short stay on the south coast.

12 days: add safari

Add a night near Yala or Udawalawe for leopards and elephants, and an extra day in Galle’s fort town.

14 days: slow it down

What to look for in a package

• Private driver-guide: roads are slow, so a driver who knows the route matters more than a faster flight.
• Train segments: the hill-country railway is a highlight, but sections have been affected by flood damage. Ask which sections are running at your dates and whether a road alternative is built in.
• Safari quality: ask about park choice (Yala can be crowded; Udawalawe is quieter).
• Boutique stays: tea-estate bungalows and restored villas set the tone.

When to go

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is required before arrival. From 25 May 2026, a free 30-day tourist ETA was introduced for passport holders of 40 countries; check whether your passport is included and apply on the official portal only. Your passport should be valid for six months.
