October 2026Nepal

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and the gateway to the Himalayas: a chaotic, fascinating city of golden stupas, medieval palaces, incense-filled alleys and some of Asia’s most devout living traditions. It rewards patient travelers who like atmosphere over polish. Here is how to see it.

Where is Kathmandu?

Kathmandu sits in a bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal, at an elevation of roughly 1,400 meters (about 4,600 feet), surrounded by green hills with Himalayan peaks visible on clear days. It is Nepal’s largest city and home to its only major international airport. Pokhara, the base for treks around the Annapurna range, is a short flight or a long drive west.

The top things to do in Kathmandu

1. Kathmandu Durbar Square

The old royal palace complex of Hanuman Dhoka and its temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 2015 earthquake damaged parts of the square, and restoration continues. Foreign visitors pay an entry fee that guides report at around 1,000 rupees; confirm at the ticket office.

2. Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple)

A hilltop stupa topped with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha, with panoramic views over the valley and plenty of macaques. Climb the stone steps at sunrise for the best light.

3. Boudhanath Stupa

One of the largest stupas in the world and the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Walk clockwise around the stupa with pilgrims spinning prayer wheels, and watch the sunset from a rooftop café.

4. Pashupatinath Temple

Nepal’s holiest Hindu temple, on the banks of the Bagmati River, where cremations take place. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple, but the riverside and the surrounding complex are open to visitors. Be respectful and ask your guide about etiquette.

5. Patan (Lalitpur) Durbar Square

A beautiful square of Newar architecture and a fine museum of Buddhist art, a short drive from the center.

6. Bhaktapur

A well-preserved medieval city 45 minutes east, with pottery squares, carved wooden windows and local curd (juju dhau).

7. Thamel

The backpacker and trekking-shop district: great for restaurants, rooftop bars and outdoor gear. It is crowded and noisy, so most travelers dip in rather than stay.

8. Mountain flights

Early-morning sightseeing flights from Kathmandu give you close-up views of Everest and the high Himalayas in about an hour.

Practical tips

  • Visa: a tourist visa is available on arrival at Kathmandu airport or online in advance. Reported fees are US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days; payment in cash is often requested, and your passport should be valid for at least six months. Check the Department of Immigration for current rules.
  • Money: carry Nepali rupees in cash; many ticket offices do not accept cards.
  • Dress: cover shoulders and knees at temples, and walk clockwise around stupas.
  • Pace: the city is busy and polluted; a private guide and car make it far easier.
