A Heritage Sanctuary on the Outskirts of Shanghai
Why Amanyangyun Shanghai Is Unlike Any Other Luxury Resort
Amanyangyun Shanghai is one of the world’s most extraordinary luxury retreats — a living testament to preservation, heritage, and the art of stillness. Set on 140 pristine hectares just outside downtown Shanghai, this remarkable Aman resort was born from a 15-year mission to save over 10,000 ancient camphor trees and 50 Ming and Qing Dynasty dwellings from demolition, transporting them more than 700 kilometres to their new home.
The name says it all — yangyun, meaning “nourishing cloud,” a poetic nod to the expansion of the mind. Whether cycling through centuries-old forest, participating in traditional tea ceremonies, or surrendering to one of the Aman collection’s most comprehensive spas, Amanyangyun offers an experience that goes far beyond a hotel stay.
Hotel details
24 Ming Courtyard Suites and 13 Antique Villas — each reassembled brick by ancient brick — offer private courtyards, lattice screens, natural materials, and an atmosphere of serene seclusion. All villas include butler service and a private swimming pool.
Five signature restaurants celebrate culinary diversity. Lazhu reimagines Jiangxi and Cantonese classics; Arva brings lakeside Italian farm-to-table dining; Nama honours Japanese washoku tradition. The Bar offers artisan cocktails and afternoon tea beside an antique fireplace.
Located in Maqiao Town on the outskirts of Shanghai, Amanyangyun is a 20-minute drive from Hongqiao International Airport and approximately one hour from Pudong International Airport. Downtown Shanghai is around 45 minutes away.
One of the largest spas in the Aman collection — ten treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a Russian banya, Turkish hammam, yoga and Pilates studio, and a fully equipped fitness centre, all set within the ancient camphor forest.
The Nan Shufang cultural pavilion hosts traditional calligraphy, Chinese painting, tea and incense ceremonies. Guests may also explore the forest by bicycle, visit the organic garden, or join guided nature walks through the ancient camphor groves.
The Cultural Discovery Centre welcomes children aged 5 to 12 with immersive programmes in pottery, paper cutting, and calligraphy — introducing young guests to China’s remarkable artistic heritage.
“Amanyangyun is not simply a hotel — it is a place of rare significance. A forest saved, a dynasty preserved, and a sanctuary created that stands as one of the most extraordinary luxury experiences in all of China.”
