Visiting the Elephant Nature Park

Elephant Nature Park is a non-profit advocacy for elephants in Thailand, and it allows visitors to learn about elephants from an educational perspective. It is a different experience than most tourist attractions because you will see elephants grazing, playing, and socializing rather than performing in a show, or giving rides.

At the park, all elephants have been rescued from abuse, neglect, and bad working conditions by untrained mahouts. The foundation keeps comprehensive history files on each elephant so visitors can know their unique backgrounds.

The elephants are managed by owner Lek, who has received numerous awards for her excellent work in this field and is well-respected in the wild elephant world. The elephants are allowed to walk exuberantly as they would in the wild, but because of their traumatic experiences, they continue to need support from care-givers.

The foundation has an outreach program called ‘Jumbo Express’ that drives to the remote areas of Thailand to provide emergency medical treatment for elephants. As the organization builds trust in these communities, they are able to educate the locals about better practices when working with elephants and improve their lives.

The park will pick you up from your hotel in Chiang Mai and bring you to the local fruit market to pick up some supplies for the elephants. After that, you will spend the day learning about the elephants and learning about their biology, psychology, and behavior from informative experts.
