Jeonju is Korea’s food capital and the keeper of its traditions: a mid-sized city in the southwest whose Hanok Village holds hundreds of traditional tile-roofed houses, and whose bibimbap is considered the country’s finest. It makes an easy and rewarding day trip from Seoul, or a night to slow down.
How to get to Jeonju from Seoul
The KTX high-speed train from Seoul reaches Jeonju in about one hour and 40 minutes, so a day trip is easy, though an overnight stay lets you enjoy the village in the evening when day-trippers have left. Reserve seats ahead on busy weekends.
What to see in Jeonju
Jeonju Hanok Village
Hundreds of traditional hanok houses line narrow, winding lanes. Wander the alleys, stop at tea houses and craft workshops, and try a hanok stay for the full experience. Renting a hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, is a favorite activity; shops in the village rent them for a few hours, and some packages include a voucher.
Jeondong Cathedral
A handsome brick Catholic cathedral in the Romanesque-Byzantine style at the edge of the village, built to commemorate Korean Catholic martyrs.
Gyeonggijeon Shrine
A quiet shrine within the village, housing a portrait of the founder of the Joseon dynasty.
Nambu Market
Directly across the river from the village is Jeonju’s traditional market, more than 200 years old, with food stalls, shops and cafés. A local specialty to try here is soondae, Korean blood sausage soup.
Omokdae viewpoint
A short walk up the hill for a view of the village’s tile roofs.
