Yangtze River Cruise Guide (2026): Ships, Routes, the Three Gorges and How to Choose

A Yangtze River cruise guide for 2026: Chongqing–Yichang routes, how many days, the Three Gorges Dam ship lift, best season, luxury ships and how to book.

October 2026China

A Yangtze River cruise is the most comfortable way to see the Three Gorges: you unpack once, and the cliffs, river towns and the world’s largest dam come to you. Most cruises sail between Chongqing and Yichang, taking about four days and three nights downstream or five days and four nights upstream, and the best fit easily into a private China tour between Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai. Here is how the routes work, what you will see, when to go, how the ships differ, and how to book a cruise that is worth the time.

Routes and how many days

Route Typical length Best for
Chongqing to Yichang (downstream) About 4 days, 3 nights The most popular choice; faster with the current, and it fits a 12- to 14-day China tour
Yichang to Chongqing (upstream) About 5 days, 4 nights A slower, more relaxed pace, with the gorges unfolding gradually
Longer sailings downstream toward Nanjing Longer than a week Travelers who want the river itself to be the holiday; offered less often

Sailings between Chongqing and Yichang run on a weekly schedule. Downstream saves a day; upstream suits travelers who want more time on board.

What you see on a Three Gorges cruise

  • The Three Gorges: Qutang, the shortest and most dramatic, guarded by the temple town of Baidicheng; Wu Gorge, with its twelve peaks; and Xiling, the longest, ending near the dam.
  • Shore excursions: they differ by ship and direction. Typical stops include the Three Gorges Dam, Shennü Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges on the Daning River, Baidicheng, the Fengdu Ghost City, the Shennü Sky Road clifftop walk and the White Crane Ridge underwater museum at Fuling. Some ships also pass the Gezhouba locks at Yichang.
  • The Three Gorges Dam: a guided visit from Yichang, and the ship’s own passage through the dam.

The ship lift and the five-step locks

The Three Gorges ship lift raises or lowers a whole cruise ship in a single chamber, with a maximum vertical lift of 113 meters, about the height of a 40-story building, and passing through it at night is one of the highlights of the cruise. The lift closes from time to time for maintenance or because of water levels and weather; in 2026 it closed for scheduled maintenance from 18 August and reopened on 29 September. During closures, ships use the five-step locks beside it. On some ships the ship-lift passage is an optional extra at an additional charge, so check what your fare includes.

Best time for a Yangtze cruise

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable months, avoiding the heat of a Chongqing summer. Avoid China’s national holiday weeks in early May and early October, when ships and sights are busiest.

Choosing a ship

Yangtze cruise ships range from large, simple vessels used mainly by domestic tour groups to international-standard ships with balcony cabins, English-speaking cruise staff and Western menus. For a first cruise, look for:

  • Balcony cabins on every cabin, ideally with a suite option.
  • English-language guiding on shore excursions and onboard lectures.
  • A recent build or refit: the new Yangzi Explorer was built to the standards of the ship lift, so it can use the lift rather than the locks when the lift is open.
  • Small groups ashore: ask how excursions are run and whether optional ones cost extra.

Combining a cruise with a China tour

A typical 14-day private journey runs Beijing, Xi’an, a flight to Chongqing, the cruise to Yichang, then a flight or high-speed train to Shanghai. Chengdu, for the giant pandas, is an easy add-on before the cruise. Your operator should book the connecting flights, transfers to and from the pier, and guides in each city.
