The Essence of Shanghai
Our expert guides to exploring Shanghai Written by our specialists from their own experiences, these guides share the best ways to discover Chengdu.
Shanghai: Where the Light Never Fully Settles
The light changes on the Huangpu River before the city does.
Glass towers flicker across the water while ferries cross between riverbanks already glowing beneath the evening haze. Somewhere nearby the smell of steamed xiaolongbao drifts from a kitchen hidden beneath old lane houses the city never quite got around to replacing.
Shanghai moves differently from the rest of China. Faster. Sharper. More restless.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November
Known for
Art Deco architecture, skyline views, jazz-era history, xiaolongbao and the contrast between old and new Shanghai
A moment to remember
Watching neon reflections move across the Huangpu River while rain drifts across the Bund after dark
Along the Bund, colonial facades face the futuristic skyline of Pudong across the river, while only a few streets away the French Concession still holds its quieter self beneath plane trees, hidden cafés and old lane houses where afternoon light falls slowly through open windows.
Deeper in the old city, Yu Garden offers classical rooftops and koi ponds unexpectedly hidden within the modern streets surrounding them. And after dark, the city transforms entirely — neon reflections ripple across wet pavement while jazz lounges and rooftop bars along the river hold something of the glamour Shanghai has never quite let go of.
Even now, Shanghai shifts constantly between reinvention and memory, from the restored shikumen alleyways of Xintiandi and Tianzifang to the river light changing above the Huangpu long after the rest of the city has gone quiet.
Long after leaving, people often remember Shanghai in surfaces — light against glass towers, rain across empty pavement, or the feeling of a city that never fully settles into one version of itself.
