Xiahe: Gateway to Tibetan Culture and Labrang Monastery
Nestled in a stunning mountain valley, Xiahe is home to one of the most significant Tibetan monasteries outside Lhasa, offering visitors a rare chance to experience authentic Llamaist Buddhism and Tibetan culture without traveling to Tibet itself.
The vibrant Labrang Monastery, founded in 1709, stands at the heart of Xiahe and draws thousands of Tibetan pilgrims each year, dressed in their finest traditional and colorful attire.
Prayer Wheels at Xiahe Monastery
Visitors can join the pilgrims on their devotional circuit, spinning prayer wheels around the monastery’s sacred grounds. Nearby, the expansive high grassland steppe offers a serene setting where the skylark’s song fills the air, as Tibetan nomads tend their grazing yaks.
