The Essence of Xian
Our expert guides to exploring Xian Written by our specialists from their own experiences of visiting Xian, these guides will help you make the most of your time there.
Xian is one of the most historic cities in China, where ancient dynasties, Silk Road culture, and everyday local life still exist side by side. More than just the home of the Terracotta Warriors, Xian carries a deeper atmosphere-one shaped by centuries of history, trade, religion, and tradition.
Yet Xian never feels frozen in time. The city moves with energy busy streets filled with the smell of grilled lamb skewers, bicycles passing beneath old stone gates, and local markets where generations still gather at dusk. History here isn’t kept behind glass. It remains part of daily life.
The Soul of Ancient China
For centuries, Xian stood at the heart of imperial China. As the capital of multiple dynasties, the city became a meeting point of culture, trade, religion, and ideas flowing in from Central Asia and beyond.
Even today, that mixture still shapes the atmosphere of the city. You can hear it in the call to prayer near the Muslim Quarter, taste it in hand-pulled noodles seasoned with cumin and chili, and feel it while walking along the ancient City Wall as the evening light settles over the rooftops.
Xian carries a kind of depth that many modern cities have lost. It’s not polished or overly refined and that’s exactly what gives it character.
A City Best Experienced Slowly
The most memorable moments in Xian are often the quietest ones. Watching elderly locals practice calligraphy with water on the pavement. Sitting in a small teahouse hidden behind a crowded street. Hearing the distant sound of traditional music drifting through the old quarters after dark.
There’s a warmth to the city that feels genuine. People are direct, proud of where they come from, and deeply connected to the history around them. Even with its growing skyline and modern pace, Xian still feels grounded in something older.
Food, Culture, and Everyday Life
Food in Xian tells its own story. The city sits at a cultural crossroads, and the cuisine reflects centuries of movement along the Silk Road. Flatbreads, noodles, lamb dishes, and rich spices appear everywhere, especially in the lively streets around the Muslim Quarter.
Beyond the famous skewers and hand-pulled noodles, Xian is also known for Roujiamo often described as a Chinese-style hamburger filled with slow-cooked meat inside freshly baked flatbread sold throughout the city.
But beyond the famous dishes, Xian is also about atmosphere. Lantern-lit alleys, crowded night markets, hidden courtyards, and the feeling that every street carries layers of history beneath it.
